Welcome to Embodied Wisdom.
I’m Janice Canning, a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) with over 30 years of experience supporting people as they reconnect with their inner wisdom and find peace in life’s challenges. My goal is to create a compassionate, welcoming space where you can explore your innermost thoughts, feelings, and experiences as you work toward meaningful personal growth and healing.
Who I Work With
My clients include members of first responder teams, veterans and military, First Nations, 2SLGBT+ communities, adults, adolescents aged 10–19, seniors, and those with a spiritual orientation. Many people I work with face feelings of isolation, rejection, or stigma. Whether you’re navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, chronic illness, or spiritual challenges, I’m here to walk alongside you on this journey.
What You Can Expect
Our sessions offer a calm and welcoming environment where you can feel heard and understood. Together, we’ll work to:
Slow down racing thoughts and reduce overwhelm.
Challenge unhelpful beliefs and foster self-acceptance.
Build healthy boundaries and let go of self-sabotaging patterns.
Embrace your authentic self and create new, empowering perspectives.
This process is about helping you reconnect with your inner wisdom and find clarity amidst life’s challenges.
My Approach
I tailor my methods to suit your unique needs, drawing from approaches such as:
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT): Align your actions with your values for lasting change.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT): Shift unhelpful thoughts to build a healthier mindset.
Clinical Hypnotherapy: Address deep-seated phobias, addictions, mental and physical habits through subconscious healing.
Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy (PaT): Gain profound insight and healing for PTSD and treatment-resistant depression, and end of life or chronic illness anxiety.
Mindfulness and Somatic Therapy: Cultivate awareness and peace within your mind and body.
These methods are designed to help you find balance, inner calm, and the tools you need to face life with confidence.
Why Work With Me
With over three decades of experience, I bring a holistic understanding of healing, blending medical and psychological insights with diverse cultural and spiritual perspectives. My training spans the western scientific approaches to the physical and psychological self, and the energetic systems (TCM-meridian system) from the Eastern philosophies and practices.. I incorporate diverse spiritual practices learned from personal apprenticeships, theological training and years of personal meditative and reflective practices.
As a Spiritual Director, I welcome the integration of spirituality into mental and physical health. My inclusive, affirming approach ensures clients from all backgrounds feel valued, heard and understood.
My Journey to Becoming a Therapist
Growing up in Montreal, I was inspired by many cultural and spiritual traditions found in this cosmopolitan Canadian city. This experience with diversity ignited my passion for human connection, and cultivated awareness of global healing approaches. Western Plant Medicine, Alchemy-spagyrics, First Nations and Celtic spiritual ceremonies are some of the traditions that honour the mystery and awe of all-that-is.
I became a trauma counsellor, practiced physical and energy healing as a certified Shiatsu therapist, and experienced spiritual knowledge found in deep listening to the natural world. I have worked with survivors of domestic abuse and violence in our communities, with first responders and military who witness catastrophic events in the everyday care of their communities. My personal traumatic life experiences and subsequent healing received from mind, body and spirit healers, led to embracing compassion, care and love of self.
These experiences and teachings deepened my understanding of how we humans develop physical, social, and psychological resilience in response to traumatic experiences. Understanding that deepens my rapport with clients during their personal healing and growth.
Outside of Therapy
When I’m not working with clients, I find solace and healing in nature. Whether walking through the woods, canoeing across a peaceful lake, or marveling at a sunrise, nature is my sanctuary. I practice meditation and Chi Gong daily. Spiritual journeys, walking the Camino in 2018 and visiting Buddhist shrines in Thailand in 2016, inspire my spiritual practice. I am an avid reader and lifelong learner. I honour my teachers and mentors and the lineages that have been transmitted for generations from all cultures, that continue to support human enlightenment and evolution to this day and beyond in our collective future.
